About the Course
The Qualsafe Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) is a regulated and nationally recognised pre-hospital care qualification that builds on the Level 3 FREC foundation, expanding both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to manage a wide range of emergency and urgent care situations in out-of-hospital environments. It is designed for individuals seeking to progress their careers within the NHS, private ambulance services, event medical provision, and specialist emergency response roles such as emergency care assistants, intermediate ambulance practitioners, associate practitioners, healthcare assistants, or those working in military, police or fire service contexts.
Delivered over a minimum of five taught days combined with guided self-directed study, the course equips learners with advanced competencies in patient assessment and physiological observations, airway management, ECG application and monitoring, trauma care, medical gas administration, management of paediatric and adult emergencies, and handling major incidents and mental health crises. It fulfils the Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) skills framework at descriptor level E and includes a mix of practical assessments, written exams, and workbook assignments to ensure competence.
Successful completion provides a qualification that supports greater employment opportunities in pre-hospital care and can form part of a progressive learning pathway toward higher-level awards such as the Level 5 Diploma in First Response Emergency and Urgent Care or paramedic practice
