Basic Life Support & AED Course (RQF)

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training equips learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to respond effectively to life-threatening medical emergencies.

The training covers high-quality CPR, safe and effective use of an AED, the management of choking, and the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis. Learners also develop an understanding of the Chain of Survival, including early recognition of cardiac arrest, calling for emergency assistance, early CPR, rapid defibrillation, and escalation to advanced life support.

In addition, the course teaches how to place an unconscious but breathing casualty into the recovery position to maintain an open airway.

These skills are vital for healthcare professionals, care and support workers, and anyone who may need to respond to medical emergencies in clinical, workplace, or community settings.

About the Course

The course is delivered in a practical, classroom-based setting with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Learners practice life-saving techniques using adult and paediatric CPR manikins, choking vests, and training AEDs to simulate real-world emergency scenarios. Tutor-led demonstrations are combined with supervised practice to build confidence, competence, and correct technique. Realistic scenarios and guided feedback ensure learners can safely apply their skills in line with current clinical and resuscitation guidelines.

This course is suitable for anyone who may be required to respond to a medical emergency, both in professional and community settings. It is particularly relevant for healthcare professionals, care and support workers, first aiders, teachers, early years staff, security personnel, fitness instructors, and workplace emergency response teams. The training is also valuable for volunteers, community responders, and individuals who want the confidence and skills to act in an emergency involving a colleague, client, family member, or member of the public.
